If you've noticed algae appearing in the water portion of your Stack & Sprout, don’t worry—we’ve got you covered! Algae can sometimes develop in hydroponic systems, but with a few simple steps, you can manage it and keep your plants healthy. Here’s how:
Method 1: Use Food-Grade Hydrogen Peroxide (3%)
Food-grade hydrogen peroxide is an effective tool for controlling algae growth. Here’s how to use it:
- Purchase Hydrogen Peroxide (3%): Ensure it’s food-grade to keep your plants safe.
- Application: Measure out 150 ml of hydrogen peroxide and add it to the water in your Stack & Sprout unit. This helps to control and reduce algae growth. Hydrogen peroxide works by oxidizing the organic material in the water, inhibiting algae’s ability to thrive.
Method 2: Perform Frequent Water Changes and Clean the Unit
Maintaining clean water is essential for preventing algae buildup. Follow these steps to keep your system in top shape:
Frequent Water Changes:- Use the valve at the bottom of the water container to empty the old water.
- Refill with fresh, clean water to keep your hydroponic garden algae-free.
Thorough Cleaning:
- Carefully disassemble your Stack & Sprout unit.
- Clean all components thoroughly to remove any algae residues.
- Reassemble the unit and refill with fresh water.
- Additionally, using food nutrients designed for hydroponics can help maintain optimal growing conditions. Measure out 50 ml of these nutrients and add them to the water according to the instructions on the product.
Regular maintenance, including water changes and cleaning, is crucial for preventing algae growth and ensuring a healthy environment for your sprouts. By following these steps, you’ll enjoy a thriving hydroponic garden with minimal algae issues.
Happy growing!
